The Solent is a moving body of water that is of significant ecological importance. The Solent also plays a key role in the transportation of passenger, freight, and military vessels. Through this one stretch of water the landscape changes considerably; from industrial ports in the city, to nesting sites on the coast’s edge. Industrial pollution such as oil, sewage and microplastics as well as large vessels from the shipping industry are putting a strain on the natural landscape and the wildlife that inhabit the surrounding areas. The UK has lost over 90% of its seagrass meadows over the past century 1. Disease, physical disturbance, from dragging anchors and chain moorings, as well as human-induced threats such as pollution are putting seagrass and wildlife under severe pressure.
This project serves as a visual exploration of human failure and our ongoing efforts to address persistent challenges. The six images presented delve into the theme of ‘failure, impossibility, and the unknown’ through both their subject matter and the creative process behind them. Four images focus on restoration sites, capturing humanity’s attempts to heal and reclaim damaged environments, while two images highlight the industrial port, emphasising the striking contrast between nature and the imposing structures of industrialisation.
Each salt print is deeply tied to its specific site, imbuing every piece with a distinct sense of place and individuality, making them not only artistic reflections but also unique records of their environments.
