This project originates from a profound fascination with the discovery of found postcard ephemera, evolving into an exploration of culture, value, and the enduring practice of note-writing across time. The act of sifting through flea market stalls, where bins of discarded ephemera lie overlooked, reveals artifacts once integral to individual narratives, now relegated to the status of commodities. These fragments, once held by faceless individuals, prompt a critical question: what insights do postcards, as vestiges of personal history, offer about culture, value, and the importance of written correspondence?
Each postcardās content has been carefully transcribed, reformatted, and transformed into a streamlined book, detaching its message from its original medium. The book, entitled The Weather is Variable, reflects a deliberate separation of form and content, encouraging the reader to consider the postcards not merely as communicative tools but as objects of layered cultural and historical significance.
The Weather is Variable reimagines discarded ephemera as artifacts of cultural and emotional value, offering a distinct exploration of the enduring role of written correspondence. Through its thoughtful design and structural coherence, the book not only preserves these fragments of memory but also celebrates the timeless power of artifacts and the written word in its capacity to connect individuals across time, space, and medium.
