Commissioned in June 1448, the angels by Luca della Robbia flanked the tabernacle of the Chapel of the Sacrament in Florence Cathedral. In February 1449 wooden wings were provided for the angels but have since disappeared. The plaster casts presented in the Cast Courts of the V&A were made in 1890 in Florence. As one walks around them, their uncanny appearance seems to emerge. Unique markings gradually become visible on the back of each angel - traces of their missing wings. The objects become a record of a lost image.
