My project will be an audio-visual installation in the form of a self-built speaker object acting as a canvas on which a 2 channel film is projected onto, and should aim to examine the rich sonic culture of the South Asian Underground, weaving together, visual, archival and sonic elements to pay homage to and draw parallels between the South Asian Underground of the 70/80s and today’s revival scene to understand it’s evolution and it’s failures in archiving/sustaining itself.
Drawing from current and historical archives, documentaries, and lived experiences of the South Asian diaspora in the UK, the project will create a mixed-media response that challenges mainstream narratives and "reimagines what can be deemed as newsworthy" referencing the visual editing style of Khalil Joseph, BLKNWS and Brandon LaBelle’s theory of Sonic Agency.
Through the juxtaposition of historical archives, contemporary footage, and personal narratives, the project will shed light on the resilience and creativity of the South Asian Underground, even as it confronts the systemic barriers and sociopolitical events that have undermined its preservation. The dual-channel approach to the visual and audio elements will further emphasize the duality of the South Asian diaspora's experience, navigating the tensions between their cultural heritage and the realities of the modern, often inhospitable landscape, whilst also celebrating it’s success as a movement today.
