This project critiques and reimagines conventional approaches to London tourism through an innovative, sound-focused brochure that foregrounds the city’s often hidden yet essential auditory landscape. Departing from traditional tourism guides that emphasise iconic landmarks and popular attractions, this brochure functions as a graphic score, mapping the city’s overlooked sonic environments. Central to the design is a deconstructed QR code that serves as both a visual representation and a gateway to London’s auditory world. The QR code unfurls into an intricate composition of musical notations and scannable elements, mirroring the ephemeral nature of sound as it drifts through urban spaces. By scanning these codes, users embark on an auditory exploration of London’s fundamental yet under-appreciated sounds—garbage trucks, street cleaners, metro toll beeps, restaurant kitchen hums, museum vacuums, roadworks, and public transport—sounds often dismissed as mere nuisances but crucial to the city’s daily operations and vibrancy.

Conventional sightseeing tours often fail to encapsulate the true essence of a city, offering sanitised and curated experiences that neglect the underlying complexities and vibrancies of urban life—complexities that are integral to the city's appeal as a tourist destination. This project confronts such failures by amplifying the sounds that are essential to London's functionality but are typically marginalised or suppressed. It raises critical questions: How does our understanding of a city shift when we engage with it through sound? Do these often-ignored sounds signify a thriving urban ecosystem or reveal deeper issues of exploitation and overconsumption? The impossibility lies in the challenge of capturing a city’s entire soundscape—an ever-changing, transient phenomenon that contrasts with the more static nature of architectural forms. This inherent transience of sound underscores the unpredictability and the unknown facets of urban life that fuel the tourism of London.
