Red Road is an experimental installation defined in time and space that aims to investigate how the introduction of new temporary boundaries can affect people’s relationship with their environment and potentially challenge established patterns of movement in public space. The red carpet has long had a strong symbolic meaning, which reinforces its presence as a temporary medium in its own right. When original road boundaries are disrupted by new temporary boundaries, the established patterns of mobility regulated by the original boundaries face failure, and the impact of the new boundaries is unknown.
Christo’s ‘parcel’ installations provide an analogous exploration, wherein familiar objects are temporarily transformed, prompting viewers to re-evaluate and reflect on the familiar. Similarly, introducing a temporary path may provoke shifts in behavioural norms as people reassess their typical choices. This project seeks to build on such theoretical insights, exploring boundaries not just as physical divisions but as catalysts for psychological and behavioural adaptation.
