"Pseudo Craftsman"

Section MS19, Alison Bartlett

Keywords: casting, ritual, history, memory, built-environment

An object born of intention to showcase the artistry of ancient Pagan woodcarvers. Its inspiration lies in the intricate beauty of a casted Norwegian doorway, housed within the Cast Courts of the Victoria and Albert Museum. These storied carvings, rich with history, are reimagined in the hands of clay, then transfigured into the ghostly permanence of plaster. Pseudo Craftsman seeks to honour the delicate ornamentation of cultural heritage, evoking the soul of timber’s raw essence within the purity of its new form. Here, the spirit of a forgotten craft dances with a shadowed imitation — an homage both reverent and unreal — preserving the echoes of tradition in a new form.
