This exploration focuses on the impact of dreams and insomnia on modern experiences of time, emotion, and self-awareness. Dreams, with their disjointed and surreal characteristics, blur the line between reality and imagination, often clouding rather than clarifying meaning. In contrast, insomnia magnifies the awareness of time’s passing and heightens emotional responses, providing a stark lens to examine the unconscious. Through this project, the video seeks to capture the dynamic relationship between rest and restlessness in contemporary psychology.
Dreams and nightmares are repositories of encrypted meanings, stored both in the unconscious and conscious mind. These meanings are often disrupted by the failure to experience restful sleep, as a result of constant mental activity. This disruption forms the core of how this project relates to both the MS3 theme of Encrypted Visions and the exploration of 'Failure' in this year’s Media Studies focus.
This project will incorporate a combination of AI-generated imagery, personally recorded footage, and digital media to visually represent the unconscious mind’s journey within the cycles of sleep. By fusing these different mediums, the video will create a hybrid visual language, blurring the lines between reality and imagination to depict the fragmented, surreal experience of the subconscious during sleep.
