Embedded within the context of V&A’s Cast Courts, Fallen Capital seeks to unravel the silenced histories embedded within the museum’s walls. Central to the work is the column inspired by the Sanchi Stupa Gateway in India – an artefact which was once displayed in the colonial collection but ultimately removed after the Court’s refurbishment. The replica of the column re-emerges as a reminder of the labour and exploitation which bears witness to the fragments of Empire hidden away from viewers. Besides it lies a capital – emblematic of the European ‘marvels’ displayed in the collection – which is now broken away as the column refuses to uphold the invisible empire, exposing the enduring imbalance of representation and power.
