"EXILED CUP - Alienation in the search for self"

Section MS15, Sarah Akigbogun

Keywords: moving-image, ritual

Increased global mobility has created a context where many are faced with the challenge of needing to evolve a new sense of identity away from home. This process of evolving a sense of self and identity, of carrying multiple cultures and the resulting potential cultural clash can be a source of tension for newcomers. To put it another way, this group of individuals is attempting to conform to the norms of the new society while simultaneously wanting to hold on to some traditional practices - to find a sense of belonging. As a consequence, people search for a feeling of security and belonging in their new surroundings to combat the potential sense of alienation. This is often found in objects which carry memory. I always travel with a mug from home. The mug can be considered as an emotion container. I have been studying abroad for many years and, this habit has gradually become a daily routine. The simple, repeated ritual, reconnects me to home and family.

The project seeks to replicate the sense of loneliness that can occur as a new comer in new place. The urban space is a big frame, and the figures moving in the space express a sense of the times. By combining moving objects and Frame extraction techniques, viewers can be transported to the perspective of newcomers’ world though photography. The fast-moving camera creates a sense of alienation and loneliness. I use frame extraction to evoke the consciousness of Individuals in multiple cultures, allowing me to express myself more freely and connect with others in a personal way.
