Keywords: set design, performance, landscape, spatial politics, colonialism, identity

Aking Tarangkahan My Gate looks at the 'high entry point' policy for purchasing land within subdivisions in Antipolo in the Philippines. Due to the area’s economical and geological location, the requirements for buying property in these subdivisions makes living there highly unaffordable and inaccessible to most of the population of the Philippines.

The work explores these politics through the notion of the gate - a symbol of power, wealth and marginalisation which defines and regulates the boundaries of the subdivision. Adorned with Spanish colonial motifs, the ornamentation and preservation of this architectural style represents the embracement of a dark history; demonstrating Filipino people’s pride and defiance in the face of colonialism.

Privacy and security are also key characteristics of the gate. It is guarded 24/7, with strict CCTV monitoring as well as up to date facial ID technology. This reinforces that entry and access to the subdivisions is highly controlled.
