"A palimpsest for feminist discussion: The feminist discussion"

Section MS12, Riccardo Badano

Keywords: publishing, archive, feminism

This project revisits and revitalises feminist discourse by engaging with Red Rag, a feminist magazine that ran from 1972 to 1980. Red Rag provided a vital platform for the Women’s Liberation Movement, addressing issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, domestic labour, and political activism. Its bold editorial strategies and the discussions it fostered continue to shape feminist thought today. This initiative seeks to bring the spirit and lessons of Red Rag to the Royal College of Art (RCA) community, sparking new conversations about feminism, radical politics, and social justice.

Drawing inspiration from the 14 issues of Red Rag, the project will unfold over 14 discussions that explore contemporary feminist issues while reflecting on past struggles. Each session will be recorded, transcribed, and excerpted in a publication format, preserving key moments of the conversation for future readers. In addition to the transcripts, the project will incorporate other outputs such as doodling, writing, and art-making, encouraging participants to express their thoughts and ideas through different media.

The goal of the project is to explore how gender imbalances persist today and to develop strategies for addressing them in the context of our generation. Through a combination of academic analysis, personal stories, and creative expression, this project aims to foster a collective conversation on feminism, societal injustice, and the ongoing fight for women’s rights.

The project's outcome will be a series of 14 publications, The Feminist Discussion, which will be distributed within the RCA community and beyond, ensuring the continuation of this dialogue among future students, researchers, and activists. Join us in reclaiming and advancing the conversation!
