"30 Minute Scroll"
Section MS14, Jermaine Francis
Keywords: moving-image, technology, performance
On average, users spend about 30 minutes a day on Instagram. During this time, they scroll through approximately 700 images, viewing roughly 3 seconds per image. These images range from emotionally charged content to memes, gradually dulling our sensitivity to what we consume. Social media diminishes the value of photography and videography. They become fleeting, disposable content consumed rapidly and passively, often without deep engagement or appreciation.
I present a performance video of myself physically "consuming" social media posts, printed on edible paper. This act mimics how digital media consumption has become habitual and essential, akin to sitting down for a meal. By printing the images, they gain a physical presence, offering a slower, more conscious consumption experience. This approach also highlights the addictive nature of social media and its impact on our social, professional, mental, and physical well-being.
