  • The Voice of Breaking the Cocoon* draws attention to the process of contemporary Chinese women exploring and reconstructing their self-identity under the multiple pressures of traditional culture, family expectations, and social norms. The project centres on individual female narratives, examining how women confront the dilemma of being defined, from the familial continuation expectation of having children, to gendered expectations such as being well-behaved and emotionally stable.

The piece demonstrates that women can be anything they choose to be, expressing their emotions, preferences, and what they do not want to do. We need to break free from traditional Chinese values (such as obedience, selflessness, and age-task theory) and escape the invisible shackles of women's lives.

Ultimately, The Voice of Breaking the Cocoon aims to present the struggles and strength of Chinese women in the process of breaking the cocoon, promoting social reflection on the rationality of gender norms and advocating the value of respecting women's diverse choices. Whether a woman is whole or not depends not on whether she enters marriage or has children, but on whether she can freely write her own life script.
