"The "Spatial Politics" and Functional Intervention during the Urban Renovation Process in Shanghai"
In this project, by using video as the medium, I presented and compared the examples of two renovation sites along the Suzhou River in Shanghai -- the residential areas surrounding "Gengchouli" and "Four Sages Bank Warehouse", I explore the spatial politics centered around urban renovation.
Taking the renovation of urban buildings or building complexes as an example and with the background of spatial politics, this video discusses the multi-layered significance of space. The production and existence of urban space have their physical functional significance, conceptual significance that reflects social functions, and symbolic significance related to people's lives and memories.
The video showcases and contrasts two renovation projects that are separated by only one river. The residential areas surrounding "Gengchouli" were relocated and expropriated. The traces of the past residents' lives here have largely disappeared. The doors and windows are sealed with wooden boards, and only pedestrians and a few vehicles pass through this space. This area has basically lost its functionality, and the memories of life have also left with the residents. The video then shows "Four Sages Bank Warehouse", which are significant historical sites protected by the city. The buildings here have been protected and reused. It is now open to the public as a memorial hall. Tourists can be seen passing along the street, and the green area by the river is also used by nearby residents. In contrast, this place retains the functionality, social significance, and historical symbolic meaning of space.
