How to Build a Glory Hole (Live) is a performance focused on the physical act of making a glory hole. The work uses a plywood structure I built, loosely mimicking a wall in a domestic or semi-public space.
The performance begins with me measuring and marking the surface of the board. I then use a hole saw drill bit to cut a circular opening into the wood. Once the hole is cut, I lightly sand the edges and tape around the opening, cushioning it. After the hole is finished, I tag the board with references to queer shorthand, shifting the panel from a neutral surface into something marked and claimed.
To end the performance, I stage a small “opening ceremony”. I cut a ribbon and then move behind the board to blow a party streamer through the opening, briefly celebrating the hole’s creation.
