"Here Lies the Declaration of Independence of the Philippines"
Section MS14, Jermaine Francis
Keywords: post colonialism, video
The Spanish colonisation of the Philippines has had a lasting effect on the nation’s cultural identity.
Archival research into important national documents led to the discovery of “The Declaration of Independence of the Philippines”, ironically written and proclaimed in Spanish despite its significance for Filipino sovereignty.
Through performance, film and a method of repetitive erasure, this project aims not only to reclaim the country’s statement of freedom by rewriting it in Baybayin (the pre-colonial national language) but also to map its resilience to 333 years of systematic oppression.
