"CONTACT: Alternative Publishing as a Tool for Activism"

Section MS12, Riccardo Badano

Keywords: archive, publishing, zine, spatial-politics

This project seeks to learn from and recreate the unconventional distribution process used by Kaos GL—Turkey’s first queer magazine, first published in 1991 as a fanzine in parts—in the hope that re-engaging with an older, fragmented model for the dissemination of radical ideas may serve as a helpful tool for activists today.

Kaos GL provided a vital platform for the LGTBQ+ community——first in Ankara and later throughout Türkiye——to address rights issues, promote gender equality, and inspire political action. The discussions the magazine fostered continue to shape the LGTBQ+ community movements in Türkiye today. This new series of zines seeks to bring the spirit of the original Kaos GL to London’s streets, in the hopes of challenging conservative ideas around publishing and providing today's activists——in Türkiye, in Turkish communities abroad, and potentially worldwide——with new tools for information dissemination and community formation.
