"Amnesties of Ruin | Affedilmiş Yıkım"

Section MS6, Gabriella Demczuk

Keywords: photography, material, ecology, metal

This project examines the aftermath of the 6 February earthquake in Türkiye. The central material is rust, formed through a chemical reaction when metal interacts with water and oxygen. Rust embodies a striking contrast: it emerges on some of the strongest materials we rely on—iron and steel, the very elements that support our buildings and infrastructure.

Rust projects strength and reliability, but internally, the material slowly deteriorates, revealing a hidden process of decay. This project echoes the continuing contamination of soil and water due to improper mishandling of debris and visually signifies the compromised systems. At the center of the structure is an archival photograph that shows a collapsed building that is stripped of its outer shell, making the interior visible. Carpets, open refrigerator, sofas remain suspended inside the rubble, articulating how abruptly lives are disrupted. Printed using cyanotype, the image is distressed and stained by the rusted structure that holds it

This work reflects construction amnesties that legalizes unsafe buildings in exchange for profit. The installation situates the disaster not as a natural inevitability but a consequence of neglect and political decision-making.
