"a park is..."

Section MS17, Emma Magnusson

Keywords: built-environment

My exploration will be situated in Kilburn Grange Park and will be informed by the historical and social context of the park, reflecting on how use of green space has evolved over time. I employed an intuitive drawing processes to inform my perception of the park. These processes allowed me to consider use of the park; users movements, interactions and sounds, which reflect my subjective experience of the space. Although drawing is an inherently static medium it enabled me to capture the ephemeral and active nature of the park.

When developing the project I have been influenced by the work of Barbara Hepworth, who's sculptures are static, and concrete in their formation, yet their ambiguous forms cannot be read from one perspective. The forms she creates require active engagement and embrace the temporal, ephemerality of the landscape which they occupy.

I am also informed by Jean Tinguely use of found materials, turning utilitarian objects into playful, anti-authoritarian constructions. These objects are placed within his whimsical, useless constructions. His approach echoes aspects of the community garden within Kilburn Grange Park, where plastic bottles have been repurposed into a vertical garden. With these references in mind have created an object which both embodies the informality and improvised occupation of the park in modern times, while contrasting this use with the ornamental, aesthetic concerns of Victorian design and use.
