"A Manifesto for Remembrance Through Land and Conflict"

Section MS15, Sarah Akigbogun

Keywords: scars, evolution, memory, moving-image

Ten years ago, visiting the major First World War battlefields and war graves of the Western Front I was struck by nature’s unerring ability to swallow the detritus of war - restore and renew - leaving these battle scars scarcely visible. However, the Lochnagar Crater, the largest crater ever made by man in anger, remains an imposing reminder of the memories of a war that sits beyond all living memory. This film framed around the crater examines the disfigurement, restoration and evolution of this area of farmland to encourage the viewer to appreciate the centrality of the landscapes of war in our modern spirit of remembrance.
