"The World Will Be For The Common People"

Section MS1, Ariel Caine

Keywords:

‘The World Will Be For The Common People’ questions democratic land access and distribution by exploring London ‘commons’ as sites of resistance. Here, I use Unreal Engine to explore an emergent way of mapping and inhabiting, first by identifying my sites from current and historic ordnance maps, 20 existing and 20 enclosed, then use the game engine (UE5+Cesium) to animate and occupy the virtual geographic space as it is streamed within my level game. Using the act of ‘respawning’, a tool of repetition, to connect the multiples of the otherwise geographically separate sites, including the reconnection of common land that has been lost to private enclosure. The randomised nature of the site in which the player is spawned into (from an imported data list that I will create) and a random time limit in each spawnable area will fragment the player’s experience of each site.

With the game engine being an embodiment of how commoning once existed and was lost, the video will explore how, in the present day, actors in the physical realm could utilise a virtual one to re-enable and enact this commoning.
