Iron has a very wide range of uses, but as iron oxidizes, it can lead to environmental pollution, releasing toxic substances into its surrounding environment, harmfully impacting water bodies, soil, and vegetation. Abandoned shipyards, where iron is left to rust, leaches toxic iron pollution into rivers and oceans.
This project focuses on investigating and visualizing the pollution caused by rust from abandoned boats in London rivers and its impact on the surrounding environment. I collected iron objects from sites of abandonment which was exposed to make cyanotype images, a printing process made from iron salts. These images were then oxidized with the very same iron objects collected through different techniques such as high temperature steam baths, which immersed the images with rust.
