Sound for All explores the nuanced communication between urban sparrows and the pervasive noise pollution that envelops their habitats, using Touch Design to visualize the sonic reality of these avian urban inhabitants. In the urban symphony of traffic, construction, and avian melodies, sparrows employ distinct strategies to adapt to the challenges posed by noise disturbances.
The project focuses on House Sparrows and Song Sparrows, unravelling their disparate responses to human-generated noise in the urban landscape. House Sparrows can strategically modify habitat preferences, seeking quieter areas to mitigate the interference of industrial noise with their daily activities. On the other hand, the more versatile Song Sparrows showcase a sophisticated adaptation by adjusting their song frequencies, navigating the persistent urban clamour with a nuanced approach.
Communication, stress levels, breeding behaviour, foraging efficiency, and overall well-being bear the brunt of incessant urban noise. Sparrows struggle to adapt to this anthropogenic soundscape, leading to altered breeding patterns, habitat fragmentation, and an ongoing quest for quieter spaces amidst the urban sprawl.
Song Sparrows potentially emphasise higher frequencies for enhanced recognition amid the urban cacophony. In contrast, House Sparrows exhibit simpler, potentially monotonic calls, reflecting their concerted efforts to contend with the challenges posed by the prevalent background noise in the urban landscape. The visual representations explore these adaptations, with inner circles symbolizing lower frequencies and outer circles depicting higher frequencies.
The project aims to evoke a deeper understanding of the intertwined ecological and social dimensions of this phenomenon by acknowledging gendered experiences. Insights from ecofeminist thinkers shed light on how patriarchal systems contribute to environmental degradation.
Sound for All sheds light on the profound ecological impact of noise pollution and serves as a testament to the resilience of small urban dwellers in an ever-changing auditory landscape. The sparrows' sonic dialogue becomes a poignant narrative, echoing through the cacophony of urban life, inviting deep reflection on our relationship with the more-than-human inhabitants of our shared environments.
