Recognising the difficulty in representing the metaphysical instance of musical harmony, my project aims to attempt to mediate the realm of the audible into a visual and physical experience. The outcome of the project will have to take a physical form and communicate the experience of musical harmony. It should provoke an introspection into the experience of music and attempt to articulate a character of the musical form.
The project involves the proposal of a sound instrument inspired by the structure of musical harmony. The central themes it attempts to culminate into a presentation are entropy, repetition, and fractal patterns. The instrument is something like a physical manifestation of musical structure that you can touch, choosing to engage in the different subsets of the structure, at the same time it is a visual representation of musical harmony, visualising chaos and order.
The research adopts the spirit of pattern-seeking. The studies indicate music to be a formulation of similar and divergent patterns. In a sense, the structure of music is what is essential to the experience of it. The structure is abstracted through the analysis of all kinds of musical pieces. The project recognises the value in distinct patterns that are repeated in multiple instances, eventually gaining a credible classification of abstraction.
