"Shadows of Coexistence"

Section MS16, Sonia Levy

Keywords: moving image, water, nature, landscape, environment

The project "Shadows of Coexistence" employs a multimedia approach, combining video, shadow overlay and audio to explore the ecological impact of urban development in the River Lea area. The video dynamically portrays the changing landscape using symbolic elements representing human activities and non-human habitats, unfolding the historical narrative of human interactions with the river to reveal the impacts of industrialization, redevelopment, and post-industrial recovery.

Human activities, depicted through shadow overlay, symbolize the dual nature of urban development. The visual narrative progresses from the vibrant hues of the natural habitat to the darkness induced by industrial pollution, then to the self-recovery in the post-industrial era and the challenges faced during redevelopment. During the Industrial Revolution, development irreversibly damaged the ecology of the River Lea, reducing habitat for wetland-dependent species. The post-industrial period saw the closure of many of East London's historic industries, and this derelict post-industrial area provided brownfield habitats that became a unique ecosystem for urban wildlife. However, ongoing large-scale residential development after the 2012 Olympics threatens these habitats, potentially causing a decline in biodiversity.

"Shadows of Coexistence" prompts reflection on the relationship between humans and nature. It highlights the tension created by urbanization, encouraging viewers to consider the sustainability of current practices. It also challenges the notion that only negative consequences result from human projects. It emphasizes the inadvertent positive contribution of human-altered landscapes, highlighting the resilience of nature in the face of adversity. The project encourages a deeper understanding of how human activities can positively influence and coexist with natural ecosystems.
