"Secret Haven In My Quilt"

Section MS15, Sarah Akigbogun

Keywords: memory, home

A bag that encapsulates not just physical objects but a symphony of memories. This object Woven from paper containing my mother's recipes and familiar ingredients, becomes a tangible bridge to nostalgia - meaning I can carry a piece of home with me wherever I go, wrapped in the threads of cherished flavours and shared moments. This project uses the technique of weaving to recreate home as an object. It encapsulates and brings together things that are hard to explain such as food - the language of love in tastes and smells, connecting families and communities. The things we cook, the recipes passed down, and the special flavours that make our homes unique—all come together to shape who I am. The act of weaving itself is a beautiful metaphor for bringing disparate the woven texture of the bag mirroring the intricate layers of my experiences with food. The act of weaving itself is an element together, just like a bag unites various aspects of my culinary identity. It's a tactile and visual representation of the rich tapestry that represents my relationship with food and home. Each random pattern tightens with time and memory, making it a sensory journey that transports me straight back to the warmth, comfort, and belonging of home.
