Noise, Trees and Necrosis is concerned with the impact of noise on pine trees. Twelve years ago, a study conducted in New Mexico found that the growth of pine tree seedlings reduced by 75% in noisy areas compared to quiet areas. This study indicated that noise pollution impacts pine tree growth and development. Reportedly, noise can suppress seed germination and growth; suppress plant immunity against subsequent pathogen attacks. And suppress stress tolerance. In addition, noise disrupts the ripening of the tree fruit—disturbing the reproduction of new seedlings. Noise is also thought to interact with a plant’s ability to photosynthesise. This can lead to leaf damage, reducing the plant’s photosynthetic efficiency.
The specific damage caused to pine tree cells was represented through 3D animation— illustrating how noise affects tree growth, whilst incorporating disruptive noise in the process. The aesthetic of the video mirrors the gamified and dramatic aesthetic of scientific imagery and educational videos.
