"Kimono"

Section MS2, Kelly Spanou

Keywords:

Kimono, more specifically, 'Kosode' is one of the most famous Japanese traditional outfits. The production of Kimono was inspired by clothes imported from China, called 'Gofuku'. Then Japanese people developed the style of 'Gofuku' by adding layers of silk fabrics. Initially Kimono were primarily used as an undergarment - similar to the Western corset- , and soon developed into fashion wear (Moyo Kosode). Males were regarded as 'Omote' (surface/front), whereas females were regarded as 'Oku' (inner/back). Interestingly, 'Obi' that translates as a belt and corsets share similar functions in the sense that they compress women’s body to fit a particular image. I made a a see-through Kimono that combines traditional Japanese craft with the Western “Obi” in order to blur the boundaries between inside and outside, male and female in Western and non Western fashion and cultural constructs.
