"Documenting the Undocumented - Where the Hands Go"
Section MS14, Jermaine Francis
Keywords: identity, photography
My starting point is a catalogue. Not just any catalogue but a catalogue through of the narrative undocumented Vietnamese migrants who, in their quest for a new home, have left behind not just belongings but the very essence of their identities, including their names.
A scroll with overlapping pages, with photos of people’s fingerprints and a series of photos at a Vietnamese restaurant.
The top pages will be an edit photo using cyanotype technique and fingerprints representing the idea of immigrants’ fingerprints or their identities being unable to be traced. While the bottom pages will be a series of photos of where their hands touched, metaphorically where they worked without showing their faces. As immigrants in this case being considered illegal, their individualities were taken away but at the same time, they were willing to hide their own identities from the eyes of authorities. With all the objects and kitchen activities still going on but without a sense of human presence, it feels like they are ghosts in their own working space.
