"The world in the glass box"

Section MS16, Sonia Levy

Keywords: water, environment

During a walk by the River Lea in Olympic Park, I began exploring how different life forms coexist. I observed the intricate ecological cycles of nature, which significantly expresses the Earth's self-regulation, as Lynn Margulis's Gaia theory described, which was also considerably degraded due to centuries of industrialisation and urbanisation. My project aimed to show the interplay between natural and unnatural environments, emphasising humanity's impact on this dynamic ecosystem.

In addressing environmental destruction, I chose reeds as a thematic element symbolising the river and the disappearance of wetlands. The artwork, created through a combination of photography and drawing, seeks to mirror the extreme fragmentation of the environment near the Olympic Park. It visually aims to capture the ecosystem's breakdownstem, with the sketched, grey, and lifeless segments representing areas that have succumbed to destruction.

Inspired by the Natural History Museum's exhibition approach, I envisioned creating a small eco-cycle world enclosed within a glass box. This glass box served as a metaphor for the enduring traces humans leave on the environment and the potential confinement of our future if we fail to consider the intricate ecological cycles of nature.
