"The Handbook of Invasive Species to the River Lea"

Section MS16, Sonia Levy

Keywords: water, book, environment

My project aims to challenge traditional ecological information presentation by proposing a speculative model illustrating how capitalism and industrialisation disrupt ecosystems. It serves as a commentary on the colonial legacy of encyclopaedic projects, emphasising the inadequacy of such form in capturing the natural world's entanglement. In this sense, traditional encyclopaedias may hinder a comprehensive understanding of the Anthropocene.

While exploring the River Lea, I witnessed destructive processes that motivated me to undertake this project. After being inspired by projects like "Feral Atlas: The More-Than-Human Anthropocene" (2020) by Anna L. Tsing, Jennifer Deger, Alder Saxena and Feifei Zhou, I recognised the need for additional forms of communication. My project aims to provide a personal interpretation on a local scale.

The Handbook of Invasive Species to the River Lea takes the form of a concertina-style book, offering a unique presentation of ecologies as "entangled".1 I illustrated specific invasive plants and species, detailing their effects and industrial origins. Departing from the traditional encyclopaedic approach to writing about animal, plant, and fungi species—typically focused on individual survival and presented objectively—this project challenges conventions. It seeks to alter our perspectives by highlighting the ongoing destructive processes within the River Lea ecosystem.
