"Pans and Pots Of April In Shanghai"

Section MS11, Mhamad Safa

Keywords: noise, protest

This project outlines the sonic resistance measures that the citizens of Shanghai used to protest against the government’s excessive COVID-19 restrictions. It is based on the lockdown of Shanghai in April and May 2022, during which the citizens were unable to move freely, but were only asked to stay at home. In the absence of any support and no result from all complaints, we had no choice but to organise the most primitive way to protest by knocking pots and pans on our balcony.

At that time, there were many posters designed by citizens themselves, which were used to call on others to participate in this event of "knocking pans and pots for food". The posters unpack the methods of distribution where residents were instructed to generate noise during particular times of the day. These posters were as musical and resistance manual, to percussive and resistance sonorous urbanism.

Because citizens are forbidden to talk about this matter on any social media, the project emphasises the "speechless" through posters. Following media studies, the project will also exist in the form of a recording of events that actually happened at that time, which will be later transformed into a documentary.
