"Close and distant"

Keywords: sound music

The relationship between humans and plants is close and distant. How can we detect communication with plants? If plants had voices and emotions, would they be able to communicate their feelings? These were the guiding preoccupations underlying my research I investigated different ways to explore plant sounds: including listening to the microamperes when they transport nutrients, feeling for the vitality of plants by applying the current sound of positive and negative currents to the leaves through the current converter. From this fixation, I learned that exploring plant sounds can be more than listening to vital signs. In this work, I gather a collection of the sounds made by plants in different environmental conditions, combining the sound waves to create a graphic, and creating graphic based on the audio image. Each different wave band image represents a different kind of plant… Through this work, we intimately hear the sound of branches extending, and experience how leaves are moved by the wind and shaken by the movement of people.

The work brings these subtle forms of plant life and expression into the frame, allowing us to observe and closely experience them through sound. Scenes include the rupture of branches breaking, leaves swaying in the wind, raindrops, and leaves falling, high winds, and small winds.
